Potsdam Public Library Computer Center announces new slate of computer training classes for August

POTSDAM – The Potsdam Public Library Computer Center has announced its lineup of computer training classes for August.

• Aug 1, 3, 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, 24, 29, 31: Open Lab, 9 – 11 a.m. Let the center help you to discover the range of free educational and self-improvement opportunities your library has to offer. Whether you’re trying to snag one of those scarce jobs, or just want to explore a new area, they’re here to help you.

• Aug. 2: Fused Solutions: Programming with PHP and Advanced Web Design Part I, 10:30 a.m.-noon. Building on HTML fundamentals, you will learn PHP, a general-purpose scripting language. This allows web pages to collect data, display dynamic output and much more. Now open to all. Class will be followed by lunch courtesy of Pizza Hut, Potsdam IGA or Subway.

• Aug. 9: Programming with PHP Part II, 10:30-noon. See Aug. 2.

• Aug. 16: Fused Solutions: Intro to Computer Science and Programming (with Java) Part I, 10:30 a.m.-noon. Class provides an overview of the history of computing and its general concepts. Class will also include a discussion of the different languages used with Java to build simple programs. Now open to all. Class will be followed by lunch courtesy of Pizza Hut, Potsdam IGA or Subway.

• Aug. 19: Downloading E-Books and Audio Books (Overdrive), 10 a.m.-noon. Learn how to download these items from the library website on to your own laptop, Nook, i-Pad etc. from home. (Service not currently available for Kindle). No gas, no time, no fines (items are automatically removed on the due date).

• Aug. 23: Fused Solutions: Intro to Computer Science Part II, 10:30-noon. See Aug. 16.

• Aug. 30: Fused Solutions: Intro to Open Source Software and Operating Systems (with Ubuntu), 10:30-noon. Explore the world of open source software and learn how it is changing our lives. This class will include a brief history of the largest movements that fall under the OSS umbrella, their impacts and how to “plug in” to community/collaborative software/information projects. Now open to all. Class will be followed by lunch courtesy of Pizza Hut, Potsdam IGA or Subway.

The center anticipates offering new QuickBooks classes (one daytime and one evening) in early September.

All of the services provided by P.C.C. are free of charge; but make a reservation to save a wasted trip.
