Opinion: Library provides indispensable service to community, Massena resident says

As a lifelong reader and library user I want to encourage you all to vote on the upcoming proposition which changes how the Massena Public Library will be funded. Presently I am honored to be serving on the Library’s Board of Trustees.

In this capacity I have seen even more of what the Library offers to our community. It’s a gathering place which offers more than books. The Library makes it possible to access the entire North Country Library System.

A patron can borrow audio books as well as use a computer, print or copy a document, and send a fax. There is programming which ranges from pre-school children to senior citizens.

This programming includes tech instruction author & informational presentations, community conversations, sewing, knitting, and reading groups, Lego Club and robotics.

The library provides spaces available for meetings and events, loan of table & folding chairs and more.

As I see it, the library provides indispensable service to our entire community which includes the whole Massena School District area. Therefore, I encourage you to vote on the library proposition which, because of the current Covid situation, will take place as a mail in vote.

Your ballot will come to you in the mail and need to be returned in the mail by June 9. Your ballot to vote for the library proposition will be included with but separate from the vote for passage of the school district budget proposition.

I encourage you to vote on both propositions.

Patty Ryan
