CANTON -- Multi-folk-instrumentalist Jane Rothfield will perform Sunday, April 8 at the TAUNY (Traditional Arts in Upstate New York) Center, 53 Main St.

The internationally-known Rothfield will present an afternoon of lively old-time fiddle and banjo music as part of the Fiddling Bear Concert Series, from 4-6 p.m.

Rothfield will lead a fiddle and banjo workshop from 2-3:30 p.m.

A powerhouse old-time fiddle and clawhammer banjo player, Jane Rothfield is widely recognized for her traditional and inventive style and her own award-winning original tunes. She has been performing and teaching music rooted in American and Celtic traditions since her teens when she started playing with older generation musicians from New England, North Carolina, and Quebec.

At the Fiddling Bear Workshop, Jane will teach fiddlers and clawhammer banjo players her easy-to-learn approach which combines technique, musicality, and strategies for making it easier to play better and have more fun with music.

She will teach 1-2 tunes for fiddlers and clawhammer banjo players who have several years experience playing their instrument and are able to play at a moderate speed.

The focus of the class will be to help fiddlers and banjo players play with more rhythm and musicality, how to play easier by ear and play in a jam.

The cost for this workshop is $30, or $25 for TAUNY Friends and pre-registration is requested (on tauny.org or by calling 315-386-4289).

Following the workshop, Jane will present a concert of her vibrant take on old-time music along with stories and insights about how her treasured instruments have come to her, the adventures she’s taken them on, and how she brings her distinctive music out of them.

Light refreshments will be served.

Seating is limited, and doors open 30 minutes before the start of the concert.

There is a suggested donation of $10-15 for this concert.

This concert will be the second performance in the Fiddling Bear Concert Series. This spring series, accompanying TAUNY’s 2018 “Instrumental Stories” exhibit, features intimate, house concert-style performances in TAUNY’s living room corner, with a special focus on treasured instruments and the stories they hold.

The remaining concerts in the series will be the Atkinson Family Band on Friday, May 18, at 7 p.m and Alex Smith and Friends on Saturday, June 9, at 7 p.m.

This concert series is made possible by the support of the New York State Council on the Arts.
