Massena Valley Garden Club to host annual plant sale

MASSENA – The Massena Valley Garden Club is hosting its annual plant sale Saturday, June 8, at 9 a.m. in the north end of the Harte Haven Shopping Center.

As many as 300 to 400 perennials will set up on tables near the Massena Movieplex 8 and sold until they’re gone.

Shoppers lined up early last year to ensure they got the best assortment, said a press release from the Garden Club.

Things went so well, “we sold out in 45 minutes,” said long-time club member Eileen Boots.

“It’s almost like a garage sale; it really goes fast,” she said, adding that this year, “maybe we can set a record -- half an hour.”

Garden Club members grow the hearty plants in their private gardens at home then harvest some of the best ones to sell and share with others.

Boots said as many varieties as possible are labeled so shoppers know exactly what they’re getting. But some are sold before they show any bloom “so we don’t know what color they’re going to be be.”

The sale will fund an ongoing downtown beautification project, said the press release.

More than 25 people have already volunteered for the project to tend the 19 stone pots that a village Department of Public Works summer-intern crew placed downtown Thursday under the supervision of Garden Club member Barb Sanford.

And several more club members will fan out this week to add more color and beauty to nearly a dozen public parks and green spaces here. Then, they will look after the gardens all season, the press release said.

Those sites include the clock island at the corner of Main and Philips streets, the corner of North Main and Maple streets, the Homecroft Entrance, Bridges Avenue, Prospect Park across from the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corp., East Orvis Street Park, and the cemetery wall and parking lot near the Massena Police Department off Andrews Street.

The Garden Club, which originated in 1977, is always seeking new members and keeps its annual dues at $15 to stay affordable for all those who want to join.

Except for the winter when many members are away, the group gathers once a month at the Senior Citizens Center on Beach Street to conduct club business.

They also schedule out-of-town trips for flower-related events like the tulip festival in Ottawa, a lilac-nursery or tree-farm tour all of which are typically followed by members having lunch.
