Kids Expo planned in Potsdam on June 9

POTSDAM -- The St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce will host its inaugural North Country Kids Expo on Saturday, June 9, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Maxcy Hall Field house at SUNY Potsdam.

“There are a number of local businesses, organizations and vendors who cater to families, and there are a lot of families who are always looking for things to do with their kids,” said chamber executive director Brooke Rouse.

“This event will be an interactive day of play with exhibits, demonstrations and play spaces -- as well as being a resource fair so that people know about what is available for families, from health care to campgrounds, child care to party planning. Exhibitors will be highlighted from across the north country and attract attendees from just as far,” Rouse said.

The chamber aims to make this an annual event that gives businesses, vendors, camps and organizations the opportunity to showcase the fun and engaging activities as well vital resources and services they have to offer to families and children in the North Country region.

The show will launch just as local schools are getting ready to close for summer break and give parents and families the opportunity to learn of the many summer activities available for them.

Families will have an opportunity to learn about events and programs at regional attractions, such as the Frederic Remington Art Museum (Ogdensburg), Nicandri Nature Center (Massena), Aquatrium (Brockville, ON), the Wild Center (Tupper Lake), Almonzo Wilder Farm (Malone), the North Country Children's Museum (Potsdam), Call of the Wild Dog Sledding (South Colton) and Titus Mountain (Malone).

Kids will be entertained by Cubby T. Clown's balloon art, face painting and jokes as well as the opportunity to build your own stuffed animal with EM Bears. Games and prizes will be hosted by Kiwanis Club of Potsdam & Norwood and St. Lawrence NYSARC, and craft and interactive play stations will be set up at numerous booths. 1340 WMSA & Mix 96.1 with a live broadcast.

The budding creator will be Intrigued by pottery artist Andrew Norrell, paint stenciling with Junkchique, plant pot painting with Lowe's of Potsdam and upcoming shows and opportunities with the North Country Community Chorus, Community Performance Series and Crane Youth Music. Author V.A Dawn will be sharing her stories and signing books, and Maple Rock Bed and Breakfast Cooking Classes will have fun lunch box activities.

Resource partners committed to caring for families, such as the Canton Day Care Center, Child Care Coordinating Council, Claxton Hepburn Medical and Wellness Centers, Fidelis Care, Youth Advocate Programs of St. Lawrence County and St. Lawrence Child Care Council, Inc. will be available to talk. Growing families can appreciate conversations with Doulas of St. Lawrence County and St. Lawrence County Birth Connection, as well as a comfortable nursing station for infant mothers.

Treats and gifts can be purchased from Balsam Springs Soaps, Nut Shop International, Sugar Valley Bakery, Essential Life Lansdowne, CTC Dog Gear USA, North Country Baby Blessings, Phil and Jackies Fudge, Racquette River Designs, Purses & Key Chains, AT&T, 3 Bears Gluten Free Bakery and Nature's Storehouse.

Camps and educational opportunities will be present; 4H Camp Overlook, Clarkson University, Cornell Cooperative Extension – North Wind Programs, Farm Day Camp, Deep Root Center, Mandaville Camp & Retreat Center, SUNY Potsdam Athletic Camps, Potsdam Public Library, International Student Exchange and Girl Scouts of NYPENN.

A barbecue will be held from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., with picnic area set up in the EXPO.

The Chamber is currently recruiting vendors, organizations and businesses for the event. Booth fees are from $60 to $80.

Those interested in creating interactive play spaces will be given a third booth free.
