Household hazardous waste collection set for Saturday in Canton

CANTON – There will be a free household hazardous waste collection on Saturday, May 18 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Human Services Building, 80 State Highway 310.

The collection is open to all residential households in St. Lawrence County. No businesses, schools, farms, municipalities or conditionally exempt small quantity generators may participate.

The following materials will be accepted: solvents, pesticides, vehicle fluids (no motor oil), fluorescent light tubes, adhesives, epoxy resins, polishes and waxes, antifreeze, pool chemicals, photography chemicals, household cleaning products, driveway sealers, wood preservatives, corrosives, home chemistry sets, aerosol cans containing product, products containing mercury (no thermostats), and oil based paints (no latex paint).

The following materials will not be accepted: latex paint, motor oil, asbestos, materials containing PCBs, construction and demolition material, smoke detectors, commercial or agricultural hazardous wastes, non-residential hazardous wastes, automotive batteries, explosives, flares, munitions, tires, non-hazardous recyclable materials, unsorted solid waste, radioactive materials, empty aerosol cans, propane cylinders or tanks, or electronic equipment.

Unwanted or unused prescription and over the counter pharmaceuticals and medications from residential households will be collected by law enforcement officials at this event.

The collection day is sponsored by the Development Authority of the North Country; Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties and the state Department of Conservation.
