Green New Deal kick off campaign in Potsdam Wednesday

POTSDAM -- Students, community members, and local leaders are hosting a town hall meeting to kick off a campaign for the Green New Deal at Potsdam Town Hall Community Room, 18 Elm St. on Wednesday, May 29 from 6-8 p.m.

Organizers hope to share how the 10-year plan to stop climate change touted by national political progressives will purportedly create millions of jobs, and improve the lives of people in Potsdam and the surrounding area.

The meeting in Potsdam is one of over 250 town hall meetings taking place in churches, classrooms, and union halls across the country for the Road to a Green New Deal tour this spring.

“I am worried about how the climate crisis will affect my generation and generations to come,” said Toni Kennedy, Potsdam Town Council member.

Kennedy is helping to organize the town hall event with Sunrise, the movement of young people working with Rep. Ocasio-Cortez to push the Green New Deal.

“Potsdam and the surrounding communities understand the disastrous impact the climate crisis will have on our community. As a mother to two young children, I am fearful about leaving them with a planet in which they cannot thrive. We’ve been told by scientists all over the world we have about a decade to act. The Green New Deal is the only plan to address the climate crisis with the boldness and seriousness it requires,” Kennedy said.

The Sunrise Movement and NC350 are partnering to host this event in Potsdam.

According to a press release from organizers, Sunrise plans to mobilize thousands of young people after the tour to descend on the Democratic primary debates in Detroit, Mich., and Miami, Fla. The grassroots movement plans to demand that all candidates back the Green New Deal and that the media give the climate crisis the attention the organizers think it deserves, the press release said.
