OGDENSBURG – The annual Founders Weekend, hosted by the Fort De La Présentation Association at Van Rensselaer (Lighthouse) Point, State Highway 68 and Commerce Street, is slated for July 20-21.
Founder’s Weekend celebrates and commemorates Ogdensburg’s French colonial history, and will kick off the larger Seaway Festival held at locations around the city during the following week.
Live re-enactment of land and water battles of the French and Indian War, French, British, Native and Maritime encampments, children’s activities, historical talks, demonstrations, exhibits and food vendors will all be part of Founder’s Weekend festivities.
Re-enactors, historians, colonial artisans and event attendees have assembled at Lighthouse Point for the annual event for more than a decade, coming from all over the state, Ontario and Quebec, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and other areas.
New events this year include demonstrations of flint and steel fire starting, cartridge rolling, fencing and dueling; a Maypole lecture and dance, tomahawk throwing (open to the public) and the lecture “The Attack on Fort Bull.”
Saturday and Sunday admission will be adults $7, military ID $4, youth 6-16 $2, and youth 5 and younger free. Youth 16 and younger will be admitted free when accompanied by a paid adult on Sunday.
