CANTON - The Drummer Boy for Montcalm is the topic of the Thursday, Nov. 18 noontime Brown Bag Lunch at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association, 3 East Main St.
For centuries drums were used for battlefield communication and various rolls on the drum signaled different commands.
Many times boys would be recruited to play the drums, thereby freeing up men to fight.
And if the drummer boys survived, they could end up old enough to join the army as enlisted men.
