NORWOOD – Canadian Blues, the Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company and the famed Norwood Brass Firemen are all appearing soon at the Norwood Village Green Concert Series.

The concerts take place in the downtown bandshell at 7 p.m. Admission is free, but a bucket for donations will be passed through the audience.

J.W. Jones, billed by Toronto’s Globe and Mail as “one of Canada’s top blues guitar stars,” will perform Thursday, July 21. He has played throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, Australia and Brazil.

Jones has appeared on stage with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Little Charlie & The Nightcats and Rod Piazza. His new record, "Midnight Memphis Sun," features guest stars Hubert Sumlin and Charlie Musselwhite.

Past CDs have included performances by world-class musicians David ‘Fathead’ Newman (Ray Charles sax player), Little Charlie Baty, Junior Watson, Colin James, and multi-Grammy nominee Kim Wilson.

The Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company, under the artistic direction of America’s greatest living choreographer, Paul Taylor, 82, has selected three works from his repertoire of 134 major works for its Sunday, June 24 performance. The audience should be seated by 6:50 pm.

Donald Borsh, a member of SUNY, Potsdam’s Theater and Dance Department, will give a pre-concert lecture at 6:30 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will take place in the auditorium of Norwood-Norfolk Central School.

The dance company will begin with Taylor’s landmark work, “Aureole,” first introduced in 1962. With music by George Frideric Handel, particularly excerpts from Concerto Grossi in C, F, and Jephtha, the sunny, upbeat landmark opus became the first of Taylor’s works to be licensed to another dance company when the Royal Danish Ballet began performing it in 1968.

Other works to be performed in Norwood will be “Funny Papers” and “Company B,” with songs by the Andrews Sisters.

The Brass Firemen, also known as The Norwood Fire Department Band, will present their annual hometown concert on Thursday, July 28.

Audience members can enjoy some “street music,” audience participation and a general good time.

The Brass Firemen have recently been archived in a documentary work by SUNY Potsdam Librarian Jane Subramanian. She received the Music Library Association’s “Best of Chapters” award for the work and presented it at the national association’s final session in San Diego, CA in March of 2010.

Titled “The Norwood Brass Firemen’s Strong Beat Since the 1870’s” it captures the entire history and spirit of the band.
