AKWESASNE – The Akwesasne Mohawk Casino hosts the 9th Annual Ironworkers Festival Saturday, July 23, with Native American ironworkers from across the U.S. and Canada.
The event is held in conjunction with Union Local 440 out of Utica.
Defending and reigning overall champ Chris Prophet from Local 401, Philadelphia, Pa. will be in attendance.
Opening ceremonies are at 10 a.m., including an address of thanksgiving by Eddie Gray and Loran Thompson, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe; a roll call of deceased members of Local 440 by Darlene Dilcox; a tribute to honor 9/11 with Bill Sears; a moment of silence; and remarks by Mike Swamp, retired business manager of Local 440 and Robert Cole, Local 440 Business Agent.
Skills competition begins at 11 a.m., with events in rod tying, spud throw, bolt toss, knot tying, a rivet exhibition, and a women’s packing competition.
At noon is a chicken barbecue, and music from Corn Bred begins.
At 2 p.m. is a hot dog eating contest.
A column climb contest starts at 3 p.m.
At 5 p.m. is the presentation of awards in the competitions, with closing remarks at 5:30 p.m.
