POTSDAM – The village has collected $15,232 in building permit fees and re-inspection fees in the first quarter of 2019.

During the period, the Code Enforcement Office reported issuing work permits to four commercial projects, generating $9,208 in permit fees, and five permits for residential projects, with $424 in fees collected.

Code Enforcement Officer Lisa Newby submitted her quarterly report to the April 15 Board of Trustees meeting.

In her written report, Newby said it had been “a slow winter with regard to new construction projects,” but that major projects reported in the latter part of 2018 “are in full swing and progressing very well.” These jobs include Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s new procedural building at the hospital campus on Leroy Street, Clarkson University’s renovation of Cheel Arena, and renovations at Mayfield Apartments.

At Mayfield Apartments senior citizen housing, extensive renovations are planned for all 147 existing units plus construction of a new 12-unit building, a new maintenance shop and a new community room. New certificates of occupancy have been issued for several buildings there..

A total of 5 permits were issued in the quarter for residential work, mainly for small home improvement projects.

During the period the code office conducted two business building fire inspections and 172 rental unit fire inspections, which resulted in $4,250 in fees. Of those, 30 required follow-up inspections.

The office also conducted 42 annual “assembly” fire inspections of larger buildings, 12 requiring re-inspection. That work brought in $1,050.

Twelve of the annual sorority and fraternity inspections were completed, with four needing re-inspection. $400 was collected for those services.

During the period the office issued four trash violation notices, four notices for interior furniture outside, courtesy notices to owners of six unregistered vehicles. “All these notices are an indication of the types of complaints that will soon be dealt with under out new Junk Law,” once specific procedures are worked out for the new ordinances adopted last December.
