SUNY Canton retaining ‘pet-friendly’ status, doubles accommodations for students who want pets to live with them at school

CANTON -- SUNY Canton has doubled the size of its “pet wing” in Mohawk Hall in response to increased requests for pet-friendly lodging this fall.

"Prior to this academic year, we had 70 beds in the Pet Wing," said SUNY Canton's Director of Residence Life John M. Kennedy. "Growing demand led us to make the decision to add an additional 70 beds, which brings our total number of pet-friendly accommodations to 140 beds."

Students can ask to bring a variety of pets to live with them on campus, including cats, ferrets, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils and fish, Kennedy said.

This option, which began in 1997, has helped earn the college several awards. SUNY Canton was twice named to Petside.com's Top 10 Pet Friendly Colleges list, and Great Value Colleges.net named the college as one of the best in the U.S. for animal lovers.
