St. Lawrence County’s July unemployment rate second highest in state

St. Lawrence County’s unemployment rate in July was the second highest in New York state.

The Department of Labor said the county unemployment rate last month was 5.9 percent, down a full percentage point from 6.9 percent in July 2017.

There were 2,500 people receiving unemployment benefits in July and 3,000 the same month last year, DOL said. There were 40,000 people employed in the county in July 2018 and July 2017.

To the east in Franklin County, the unemployment rate in July fell to 4.6 percent from 5.4 percent the same month a year ago. There were 900 people on the dole last month and 1,100 in July 2017. DOL says there were 19,300 people employed there in July and 19,200 the same month last year.

To the west in Jefferson County, the rate fell to 4.8 percent last month from 5.6 percent in July 2017. There were 2,200 people receiving benefits in the county in July 2018 and 2,700 in July 2017. They had 44,500 people employed last month and 44,700 the same month last year, DOL said.
