CANTON -- The St. Lawrence County legislature passed a resolution calling on the state to allow them to keep the sales tax at 4% at least until 2023.
The resolution, adopted at their Monday, March 2 meeting, cites state-imposed "mandates that have financial consequences, which includes Medicaid, special education programming, and retirement that severely strains county resources and have the potential to consume county budgets."
The resolution notes that counties are usually granted a two-year sales tax extender. In 2017, they were given an extra year to raise the sales tax from 3% to 4% through Nov. 30, 2020, which it says "was extremely helpful for fiscal planning in St. Lawrence County."
It says if the state won't grant a permanent sales tax hike, they request a three-year extension through Nov. 20, 2023.
The county’s 4% sales tax is in addition to 4% the state charges, so consumers in St. Lawrence County are charged a total of 8% sales tax.
