POTSDAM -- Work by Verizon crews in Potsdam in the last couple of weeks is part of a state broadband initiative.
Traffic lanes have been closed while the work has proceeded and the workers strung cables.
"The work is related to New NY Broadband Program," said Verizon East Area Public Relations Manager David Weissman.
While none of the work under the program directly effects Potsdam, Weissman said the new lines are part of the high-speed rural broadband expansion in neighboring towns.
Verizon last year awarded $70.7 million in Phase 3 of the New NY Broadband Program. An additional $12 million from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Connect America Fund (CAF) plus Verizon’s own investment brings the total funds to $106.6 million.
