The New York State Department of Labor (DOL) announced that more than 80,500 claims were filed last week, the first week in which claims were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is an increase over the past year by 520%, DOL said. Overall, initial claims for unemployment insurance increased by a minimum of 284% in each of New York’s 10 labor market regions.
From Monday, March 16 to Saturday, March 21, the New York State Department of Labor received over 1,734,100 total calls and over 2,270,300 web hits.
DOL says it has taken a number of steps to address this unprecedented increase in call volume and web traffic, including implementing a new, more efficient filing system based on the first letter of the applicant's last name (alphabetical order): A - F : Monday; G – N : Tuesday; O – Z : Wednesday and missed your day: Thursday through Saturday
New Yorkers seeking to file unemployment insurance claims can visit labor.ny.gov or call 888-783-1370.
