CANTON -- Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County plans a Harvest Tour in the fall to showcase the diversity of items grown and produced in the county.

The public can stop in at some of the featured farms on Saturday, Sept. 14, anytime from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Visitors are encouraged to participate in this free, self-guided tour by visiting one or all of the dozen farms opening their doors to the public on this day.

The abundance of agriculture in the county will be represented including livestock, vegetables, fruit, mushrooms, dairy and honey.

Visitors can learn about each unique operation while enjoying samples, animal interaction, tours, demonstrations, scenery and more. Those touring are invited to bring their cooler as products will also be for sale.

Extension’s Local Food Marketing Coordinator, Makenzie Farmer, describes the Harvest Tour as “a fun, family-friendly event that will give people a chance to explore St. Lawrence County’s food landscape. Visitors will get to see how their food is produced – it’s a learning experience with an adventurous twist!”

All participating households will receive a “Farm Pass” at their first farm stop, which will be stamped at each site.

On their third stamp, they will receive an ag-themed prize.

In addition to the Farm Pass, all households participating in the tour will automatically be entered in a drawing to win a gift basket brimming with local products.

The Harvest Tour is one of the marketing efforts being carried out by the St. Lawrence County Extension’s Local Food Team under the Farm-to-Table initiative. The other initiatives include free photo shoots for direct-market producers; development of an interactive map highlighting local food access points; and a Meet Your Farmer campaign telling the stories of local farmers. The Farm-to-Table project is supported via funding from New York State Agriculture and Markets.

A full brochure of participating farms will be distributed in July and August, in the meantime visit stlawrence.cce.cornell.edu. Stay in the loop with updates about the Harvest Tour on CCE’s Facebook page @cceofslc.
