North Country This Week

POTSDAM – St. Larry’s Bar and Grill will bring American comfort food and a variety of New York beers to 6 Elm Street in the near future.

Waddington native and SUNY Potsdam graduate Michael Solsberry has returned to his home county to launch his own restaurant after working his way up from busser to director of Human Resources and Finance at Pizzeria Paradiso in Washington D.C.

Solsberry said his restaurant was named to pay homage to the county and he is looking forward to creating jobs and investing the community he grew up in.

“I learned a lot in D.C., but I’ve always wanted to move back to the North Country, I’m a North Country guy,” he said.

Solsberry said that with limited options for a career in the restaurant business in the area, he decided the best way back home was to launch his own enterprise.

Solsberry said his goal is to provide high-quality food sourced from New York State at an affordable price. He’s hoping to work with local distributors and local farms once he’s up and running.

“To me it’s not as much about the farm to table aspect as it is about keeping as much money local as I can,” he said. “I want to create a fun work environment that offers high quality service and a North Country feel,” he said.

Solsberry said St. Larry’s will feature 23 beers on a new glycol tap system installed by Tapped In Line Cleaning, Canton, and all of them will be brewed in New York.

Helping craft the menu, which will feature rib eye steak, burgers and other American favorites is former Maxfield’s head chef Andy Ostroski.

Solsberry will also have darts, shuffleboard and an arcade. He hopes to feature live entertainment in the future.

“I’m looking forward to serving the community. I’m hoping to grow a strong local business that gives back to the area and provides a fun place to grab a beer or a meal with the family,” he said.

St. Larry’s Grill will occupy the building left vacant by Between the Buns and is expected to open sometime in September.
