MASSENA -- Shipping on the St. Lawrence Seaway was up in 2023 almost entirely across the board.

In a press release from the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, total cargo shipments rose 3.38% in 2023 compared to 2022.

All grain shipments were up 4.88% with 10,483 tons being transported on the seaway.

Iron ore was up 2.36% for a total of 6,348 tons, while coal was up 13.96% for 2,018 tons total.

Dry bulk rose 5.24% to 12,298 tons and liquid bulk rose 3.37% to 3,634.

General cargo declined 11.55% to 2,704 tons.

Though cargo numbers were largely up in 2023, total transits declined form 4,008 in 2022 to 3,931 in 2023, a 1.92% decrease.

“Again in 2023, the St. Lawrence Seaway demonstrated its resilience and reliability, as well as emphasizing its role as an essential component of the Green Shipping Corridor,” said Terence Bowles, President and CEO of the SLSMC.
