POTSDAM -- A Potsdam man was charged Wednesday night with driving while intoxicated after leading law enforcement on a short vehicle pursuit through the village, according to St. Lawrence County sheriff's deputies.

Alexander L. Wheeler, 24, was charged with first-offense DWI, reckless driving, unlawful fleeing police in a motor vehicle, resisting arrest and numerous traffic offenses, officers said.

Deputies reportedly initiated a traffic stop on Market Street but the driver failed to comply and fled the scene.

Following a chase through the village, the vehicle and operator were located on CR 24, deputies said.

The vehicle had reportedly become disabled and Wheeler had fled the scene on foot.

Wheeler was taken into custody a short time later and found to be intoxicated, officers said.

He allegedly refused to provide a breath sample.

Wheeler was arraigned by Judge Filiatrault and released on his own recognizance, deputies said.
