Why label democrats and republicans in paper

Not long ago I saw an article in our local newspaper about some of our St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators who donated their own money to have trees planted. I think it’s great they did this and also that we get to know about it. But why do we always have to see that “D” or “R” after their names? I think it gets in the way and reinforces the terrible division we have between our parties. Personally, once the elections are over I think they should not be working for either party. They should be working for us. Once we label a person, we stereotype them before we even get to read what they did. We may even get to trust them more if we don’t continue to get reminded they are a “D” or a “R.” That way we can focus more on what they do.
