Why hurt turtles?

It’s that time of year when snapping turtles are along our roadsides laying eggs in the soft sandy soil needed for this purpose. Why is it that some sick people find it necessary to kill or maim one of nature’s oldest living creatures. Some of these animals are 60-plus years old and pose no threat to anyone. I have lived on or near water for my entire life of 68 years and have never been harmed by these creatures either by swimming or wading in their waters. The odds of being bitten by a turtle are astronomical. So again, why?
