If the bowfishermen sound combative in their posts (about Massena carp tournament), it’s because we’ve been driven there by the constant bashing each year by the catch-and-release advocates and fish rights loons. We’ve been described as wanton indiscriminate killers of the “Noble Fish,” we’ve been pictured standing beside the pit with the caption, “Bowfishermen Stand Bbeside Mass Grave.” We constantly have to defend a sport that is recognized nationwide. It puzzles me that we seem to be fighting this battle alone. The silence from the Walleye, Bass and Muskie fishermen is deafening. How many years have these groups been establishing new spawning beds for their fish, only to have their efforts ruined by these bottom-roaming vacuums? St. Lawrence County has requested the help of a fisheries management expert to suggest ways to improve the fishery for the popular game fish species. It will be interesting to hear his recommendations.
