After viewing Canton and Potsdam schools as de facto private academies for years now the brain trust wants to merge them into one. I really can’t believe anyone could suggest or take seriously the proposal to merge the Canton and Potsdam school systems. What if anything is gained? A lot is lost. Is the point to enrich the curriculum for the college bound elite? There are 4 colleges in the two communities, use those resources. Why can’t schools share staffs? Move the teachers around not the students, for that would be a far cheaper alternative. If the idea was to dissolve and combine some of the tiny rural schools into Canton or Potsdam that might make some sense. Many Canton high students walk to school now, but with this merger they would be bused. Think about what that means to parents who have kids in sports, plays, etc. Both these school systems have spent money with reckless abandon. Oh yeah, I know, it was state money. Those pushing this merger have done so with a lot of prejudicial controlling assumptions.
