Taxpayer Votes Only? (Sound Off, May 4-10): Someone needs a seventh grade civics class. Should we go back to when only landowners were citizens? How about a poll tax? That worked for ages to keep “lesser” citizens from voting. First, everyone pays taxes. An 18-year-old student paying rent to a landlord actually pays property tax for that building. Do you believe owners are that generous or perhaps they don’t pass expenses on to tenants to keep all the votes for themselves? Every man, woman and child buying a product or service from a local business pays a portion of its property tax. According to this logic, once we have given up driving and no longer pay gasoline tax, we should lose rights to vote on highway construction and traffic laws and just be satisfied to have a sidewalk and an occasional crosswalk. Yes, quality education is expensive.
