Wake up, teachers

I have been a loyal union member for many years. I help pay for my medical costs each pay period. Our retirees also pay a premium each month. I feel fortunate to have had good medical coverage for my family over the years. So many families are not as fortunate. Wake up, teachers—you need to contribute also. In the long run, it will make your life easier and may help you to have lower classroom sizes. It’s certainly not going to help with teacher evaluations if your classroom size is increased to 30 to 35 students when you have lost staff because of budget cuts. I’ve heard that in some school districts teachers in favor of helping to pay for their health insurance are shunned by other teachers and staff for doing so. How very sad.
