In response to “Why a Large Police Department?” (Sound Off, Aug. 31-Sept. 6): You stated that Potsdam has the college students well-covered with their security forces, but the campus PD at SUNY Potsdam only has jurisdiction on the streets immediately surrounding the campus (hence, no downtown). At Clarkson, the officers are security officers only and not police (again, no jurisdiction off-campus). Therefore, the only local officers that do have any jurisdiction over college students at the downtown bars are Potsdam PD. I can’t imagine how all of the downtown activity could be managed without them. Potsdam PD is an essential law enforcement agency in Potsdam, and I think it’s time we all start being grateful instead of complaining about all their hard work. If you think what they do is easy, I suggest you hang out downtown on a Saturday night after bars close and see what the atmosphere is like.
