In response to “Massena DAV finishes new garage to house vehicles,” a new garage for the Disabled American Veterans is a wonderful gift, however what the DAV needs is newer vehicles to transport veterans who are wheelchair bound. There are no such vehicles in the DAV fleet for St Lawrence County. The closest hospital for a disabled veteran is Syracuse. Typical day for a vet and the volunteer driver is about 12 hours round trip. For a disabled veteran it is a tedious, uncomfortable, long day to say the least. The only way a disabled vet can use a local hospital such as Canton-Potsdam Hospital or Massena is for an emergency. Most of us are grateful to the VA hospital once we get there, but many fall through the cracks. We do have a VA clinic in Massena with a kind, caring staff, but they are restricted on what they can treat. This is an ongoing problem with no relief in sight.
