Underpaid ADA’s

Posted

I’ve been reading about Mary Rain’s request for higher assistant district attorney salaries because the ADA’s are underpaid compared to the rest of the state. As an attorney, this didn’t sound accurate to me, so I decided to do some research. The first number is the starting salary I found for an ADA, the second number is the average income for the area. Erie - $43,000/$41,245. Monroe - $36,000/$43,894. New York County - $60,000/$121,000. Queens - $60,000/$42,000. Nassau - $44,658/$67,776. Suffolk $59,066/$52,350. Here in St. Lawrence County, I understand the ADAs start in the low $50ks; the median income is $29,256. These numbers come primarily from the offices’ respective websites, with the Rochester and Buffalo numbers supplied by indeed.com. The average incomes are from data.newsday.com/long-island/data/business/personal-income/. Assuming these numbers are accurate, underpaid by what standards? This doesn’t even take into account the cost of living differences. There are arguments for raising ADA salaries, but I don’t think this is one of them. Have the SLC legislators asked about these numbers?
