It is correct in that some “townies” use some services in Potsdam, but some townies don’t, and both pay a considerable amount for those services already. Isn’t the assessed value of houses in the Town of Potsdam outside of Norwood village high? The valuations mean town people are paying high school and town/county taxes. Every time we buy something, like cars, food, clothing or gas we are taxed by New York State who provides money to local village government. When townies attend concerts and sporting events, they usually pay for tickets to support the local teams. Don’t people from other towns, like Colton, Pierrepont, Stockholm and Parishville also use those services as well? Are they to be taxed as well? Do you think spending will go down at all once consolidation takes effect? It will only go up. What happens to the townies when Norwood decides to petition to form their own town instead of paying Potsdam’s bills? What happens to real estate agents who will be trying to sell town properties once potential buyers find out the tax rates? Why are taxes so high in the village? Why don’t more people build houses in Potsdam? Will consolidation provide a permanent fix to Potsdam’s economic woes, or are our local politicians taking their cue from their state and federal overlords in reaching anywhere they can for more money to maintain the status quo?
