While many town residents feel they should not have to help support the colleges and the hospital with their tax dollars, I doubt few would argue that those institutions make Potsdam a better place to live. Town residents also use the sidewalks when they run errands downtown, do their grocery shopping in the village and their children go to school within the village as well. Many townspeople attend hockey games and concerts, or need blood tests and need emergency room help. The state wants governments to consolidate and they are making it necessary to do so. The only way to renegotiate the contracts that are burdening the village is through dissolution. Then the town and village can work together to run Potsdam more efficiently. It may be that property owners will be able to choose those services they want to pay for. Others will be shared costs and may actually be lower. Stop complaining, educate yourself and get involved.
