In response to "Taxes Are a Ripoff” which appeared in the Nov. 4-10 issue of North Country This Week: I agree 100 percent about the taxes in the Town of Colton. The majority of town residents receive very little for their tax dollars in the way of services. If you live in the hamlet, you receive water and sewer, but, most of us do not live there. We do have the benefit of a highway department to keep our roads in repair, plowed, sanded. We do have a transfer station, but, it is only open two days a week (three in summer...have to cater to the campers). But, as early as last budget season, our town supervisor was all in favor of eliminating the transfer site...in order to save money. That would have been nice, take away one of the few benefits we do receive, that is available to all taxpayers! As for the school taxes, well, what can one say about them? Personally, my school taxes just went up four times the amount that I paid last year! My new school tax is almost twice as much as I paid for both school and town taxes combined. I can only imagine what my town tax will be when it arrives in January! Most of the residents of this town and school district, are retired working class folks on fixed incomes, or, lower to middle income workers - many with more than one job, all of whom are living from day to day to make ends meet. It would be nice if local leaders would consider these factors when building their budgets. Instead of the constant buying and hiring, why not try cutting expenses for a change. The taxpayers’ money well is almost dry. Quit running the town and the school like we are all rich.
