I can’t believe how much property assessments have gone up in Potsdam, Norwood and surrounding areas. People are trying to sell their homes because they can’t afford the taxes. People are raising the rents on their property to pay taxes. People can’t afford to pay the rents that landlords are asking. Most of us work minimum wage jobs here in St. Lawrence County. We don’t make lots of money. I think maybe if the hospital and the colleges paid taxes instead of being tax exempt ours could go down. Just where does all the money go that the colleges get from tuition and donations? They don’t buy our kids books or supplies. The students have to buy them. Where does all the money go that the hospital gets? I know, it goes to buy more land that is tax-free. How is that fair to the working class? What happens when more people put their homes up for sale and move away? I ask you how is this fair. I think somebody better think of priorities for the town and people of the town, not just the colleges and hospitals. Tax them and save us.
