I would like to know why Clarkson, which is a private college, does not have to pay taxes. They are private! The only colleges that should be exempt are SUNY colleges. I don't understand why the residents of Potsdam allow this. Why do you think our taxes are so high? It's because of the colleges. They keep buying up taxable property, which then becomes non-taxable, so then our taxes go up to make up the difference. Any property that is not directly related to education should be taxed. Any housing, clubhouses and any other facilities that is not used for educational purposes needs to be taxed. Sure Clarkson donates money to the village, but it is very minimal compared to what they would be paying in taxes. It's about time that we stand up and let our officials know exactly how we feel and what they need to do to get Potsdam back on track. I am not the only one who feels this way, several people have said the same thing, so it's about time someone actually said it for everyone to hear. I think we should rename Potsdam to “Clarksontown.” They have taken over the village so we might as well name it after them.
