I don’t understand why St. Lawrence County is spending precious tax dollars arresting cannabis growers. Recently a Stockholm man was arrested with $20,000 worth of pot and $6,700 in cash (presumably proceeds from previous sales). Imagine if the county had collected taxes on those sales? That’s 4% of $26,700 or $1,068. Instead of receiving that money, the county had to spend money to put him in jail. And jail isn’t free. It costs about as much to keep someone in jail as it does to stay in a motel day after day after day after day. Now that he’s in jail, his customers are simply going to find someone else to buy pot from. It’s not like anything has been accomplished other than the county wasting tax dollars.
