Target in traffic

In response to “Crossing Canton” which appeared in the May 24-30 issue of North Country This Week: I agree that the crossing lights for pedestrians in Canton are too short. I walk fast and when I am halfway through the crosswalk on Main Street after the lights tells me to walk, it begins to countdown and traffic from Park Street begins to turn. If I had a handicap or walked slowly, I would be a target for that traffic which is impatient to wait for anyone and sometimes has a distracted driver talking on the phone and not paying attention. It isn’t like this in Potsdam. There the countdown shows how long you have to finish walking across the street and the traffic does not move until that countdown is done. Why can’t the Village of Canton or NYSDOT fix this dangerous situation?
