I would like to express my concern over the installation of the “Black Lives Matter” banner recently installed at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Canton. The Universalist Church has throughout its history promoted itself as an all-inclusive denomination that welcomes all regardless of race, gender, sexual preference etc. Within the diverse population of the North Country we have many who are disadvantaged, homeless, suffer from drug addiction or are victims of some form of abuse. It would seem to me that a banner stating “All Lives Matter” would be more appropriate and in line with the tenets of the church doctrine. We need to pray for and concern ourselves with the needs of all individuals. To focus on a particular race or ethnicity may appear to be popular, however would it not be more appropriate and fitting to provide all who struggle with the support and care that they so desperately need or deserve.
