In response to “College Student Crime” which ran in the Sept. 30-Oct. 4 issue of North Country This Week: the complaint about some SUNY Canton students was not racist! It was a comment about reality. I live in Potsdam and interact with Clarkson and SUNY Potsdam students in various places around town. They are all colors, all faiths and represent a broad ethnic base. They are also polite, helpful, know how to behave in restaurants and show respect for the people in the community with whom they interact. Not so in Canton. I will no longer go to restaurants in Canton when school is in session. The SLU students are not the problem; it's frequently the SUNY Canton students who apparently have been raised in an environment that has not taught them basic manners and values like using their indoor voices in a restaurant. Some of the kids they recruit have not been taught manners and values at home. SUNY Canton should include some basic life skills in its freshman orientation.
