In response to “Leave Guns at Home” (Sound Off, Aug. 31-Sept. 6): First and foremost, how can you commend the students for being law abiding, and then scold them for being irresponsible in the same thought? Students who leave their guns in the custody of the police while attending school here are doing the responsible thing. A gun is the responsibility of its owner, not the owner’s family or friends, and if the owner is not able to maintain possession of it, leaving it in the custody of the local police is the most responsible thing to do. As for this being a waste of your tax dollars, well, that’s also just plain ludicrous. Do you think the police literally sit there and watch the gun? That they pay someone a salary to monitor it?
