To individuals who use "Sound Off" as a means of complaining about services they do or do not receive through the Department of Social Services: There are rules, regulations and income guidelines that must be met for eligibility in the subsidized programs. You may not actually ever physically touch the money, but these programs deal with a large amount of money passing hands and paying for the goods and services that are being received. You may think of this money as government money, but in truth it is hard working taxpayers money. To answer the questions concerning the need to know so much information regarding an applicants income, vehicles, bank accounts, property, etc. These must be taken into consideration because without this information the eligibility for these benefits could not be determined fairly across the board. It is only fair that all your means of paying for these services yourself should be considered. If that means selling a recreation vehicle, using some of your savings or pursuing other means of obtaining the money to purchase the services yourself; the purpose is only to ensure everyone whom applies is held to the same standards. It's understandable that the process of applying for these services can be confusing and frustrating. Keep in mind that the employees of Social Services are there to help you and should be able to answer the questions you may have concerning eligibility guidelines. Though you may be angry and frustrated by the process, they are not responsible for the rules and regulations that are in place for the program you are applying for, they are simply using them to determine your eligibility. If you have concerns and feel that the rules and regulations should be changed, you should contact your legislators.
