Over the last several weeks, I have seen dogs going for a ride with their owner. At first, I think “how sweet to spend time with your dog like that.” Then, I see the owner lift a cigarette up to his/her lips. It is pretty well advertised how second-hand smoke affects children and other adults, but we have to remember that it affects our pets too. All our pets do is give us unconditional love and cheer us up on a bad day. The least we can do as owners is make sure they are as healthy as they can be. Pets cannot speak for themselves and they do not know any better, but we as humans do. We need to give them good food, clean water, and clean, smoke-free air. Pets should not have to pay for their owner’s unhealthy habits.
