I am a little tired of complaints about sales tax increases. I am a working, middle-income homeowner in Canton. Our property taxes have risen, including school taxes, annually. This presents an unfair burden on homeowners to keep government and services going, while those who do not pay taxes benefit. A sales tax increase spreads the responsibility around to all consumers of products and services. I have never understood why homeowners, struggling to maintain a household and property, are responsible for the majority of taxes paid. A sales tax increase benefits all people and increases revenue from everyone, including renters, visitors, temporary residents (like students) and all consumers. Homeowners are not the only people using our roads, our schools, our parks and government services. Let’s spread the burden.
