"Whoever is without sin among you, let him be the first to cast a stone at her." It is nice to see that so many people in the North Country are without sin. Think about this. An estimated 56 percent of the roughly 500,000 eligible New Yorkers who are 60 and older and eligible for SNAP benefits, do not sign up for them, according to a 2013 study by the Council of Senior Centers and Services of NYC, an advocacy group. As a result, many seniors who do not enroll in benefits have to decide between buying food and paying for other necessities like rent or medical expenses. Some seniors skip meals to cut down on cost. One result is inadequate nutrition, which can further exacerbate chronic diseases and make it more difficult for seniors to recover from illnesses and can heighten the risk of depression, according to research by the Department for the Aging. So to quote Charles Dickens famous character “If they would rather die,'' said Scrooge, “they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.” What has happened to our Judeo-Christian values?
