With budget crunches being announced, we have to take a close look at sports in schools. Schools were established for learning and sports as an extracurricular activity. But in these hard times, we must have our schools as a place of learning and not a sports arena. Last time I looked, the USA was way down on the list of countries in terms of educating its children. This trend can be stopped. The next time you get a flyer in the mail outlining the next budget, look carefully at how much is set aside for sports. I think the number will shock and anger you. I’m not against sports, but I feel the sports should be paid for by the parents or an outside school booster club. The elderly and fixed income tax payers should not be burdened with something they don’t participate in and have no say in. I feel the teachers are doing a fine job, but cuts in supplies vs. new uniforms every year is ridiculous. It shouldn’t even be an issue. Schools in the USA can be what they once were but the budgets must be better thought out and spending on education a number one priority.
