Safety never guaranteed

Like no doubt a sizable percentage of the residents of Potsdam, I can't help but wonder what the goal was for yesterday's protests. Blocking the main intersection in the village of Potsdam to all traffic, delaying people that could just be out to get a gallon of milk right up to potentially slowing life-saving emergency services that would inevitably be slowed getting through this mass of people all chanting their message, accomplished what? You likely amused the perpetrator that left this latest hate note and punished the vast majority of those that encountered you by this unnecessary and illegal demonstration on a state highway. As citizens of Potsdam, the vast majority of this community are sympathetic and abhor violence. But nobody, including your college president, can guarantee your safety since that's a literal impossibility. Nor do we have the power to issue you refunds on your tuition. Such discontent and dissatisfaction with your university leadership is something that you should be taking up with the SUNY Board of Trustees in Albany, not us. You have the right to protest in a law- abiding manner and to get your voice heard. But you don't have the right to block traffic, be disruptive, and force your message on people that by and large aren't guilty of what you're rightfully fighting against.
