In response to the recent survey “Do You Think Border Patrol Roadblocks in St. Lawrence County That Are Miles Away From the Border Are Necessary and Effective?” I am not sure if St. Lawrence County residents are aware, but we are in county that is on an international border. A customs agent works at a port of entry, meaning a legal port used for crossing between countries. A Border Patrol Agent patrols between the ports in an area that is 100 air miles from the border. There are plenty of people that try to cross illegally between the ports. Due to the fact that this area has an unsecured international border, monitoring of the area is absolutely necessary. If you are late for work and blame Border Patrol, then you are not leaving early enough. If you think Border Patrol is infringing upon the rights of local people, brush up on Federal Laws and Supreme Court rulings. Border Patrol are not writing you speeding tickets; they are finding people who are entering the U.S. illegally, finding drugs and weapons being trafficked through the area and backing up local police when needed. I would think the high drug problem in the area would make people happy about their presence. These agents move their families here; buy land, pay taxes, shop locally and become part of the community while making the area safer at the same time. Are roadblocks necessary? Yes. Are they effective? Yes.
