Reduce hunting season

Posted

I would like to commend St. Lawrence County Legislator Dave Forsythe in taking the initiative to reduce the timeline for the taking of antlerless deer. Many have long thought that the current season is too long. The late season of muzzle loading appears to be unnecessary. Hunters now have the ample opportunity to harvest a deer. What they don’t have is deer to harvest. Throughout the past 5-6 years deer numbers in many areas have plummeted. Many hunters are reporting that they are seeing very few and often no deer at all. Hunting in area 6A north of U.S. Highway 11 has been off limits to doe harvest for the past few years. For farmers with kill permits it’s open season. The issue of these permits appears to have severely impacted adjacent property owners. Especially those who purchased land for the purpose of hunting. I think Mr. Forsythe is on the right track however unless the issue of maps is addressed, including enhanced oversight, no changes in regulation will improve the current conditions we all are experiencing.
