In response to "College Student Crime" which ran in the Sept. 30-Oct. 6 issue of North Country This Week: the Sound Off rightfully expresses outrage over the recent criminal attack on a Domino's pizza employee. However the author's argument is not about college students, it is a veiled racist attack by students whom the author claims got a free ride from New York City so the college can boast about diversity. If we expect to deal with crime and provide a welcoming community for all students, how do you think this feels to the hundreds of New York City students, and other students of color who are here to study and be productive members of our community? The author then goes on to claim that North Country kids basically never commit crimes; and because the author's children did not receive financial aid from SUNY, there must be some grand racial/regional conspiracy. I am deeply saddened that North Country This Week would publish such a discriminatory opinion. Just because we have freedom of speech does not force one to publish hate speech.
