Regarding “Why Racial, Gender Focus?” North Country This Week Feb. 5-11: To the writer embarrassed by a headline regarding a visit from the first black female astronaut, please get over it. I think it tells it like it is. If it said “Astronaut Visited,” then the first image that comes to mind is a 40-ish, white man. Sorry, that’s the way it is. And it is special that the astronaut is a woman, and that she is black and it should be touted that way because maybe some little girl saw that headline and decided to read the story. It’s not like something like that happens every day. And after reading that story she might be thinking that if women can become astronauts, well, maybe someday she might be something that isn’t the norm. Because we do have those still – “norms” do exist. Stereotypes, good and bad, are still perpetuated. Thank you for bringing the article to light. If not, I would not have known that there is a black female astronaut, and that she did visit the area, because I totally missed that issue.
